I was just reminded by Randy Gage that it’s March 1st tomorrow. That means one sixth of the year is over already.

Wow…

And I’m sure that, as well trained MLMers you all set your goals at the end of 2010 didn’t you?

Of course you did!

So, my question to you is, ‘How are you doing on your goals for 2011 so far?’ Not just your business goals, but your other goals, personal, family, fitness?

Are you on track, or are you letting yourself fall behind?

If you are on track, that’s fantastic, and keep up the good work! But if you are falling behind is it because you have taken your eyes of the goals, or is it because you didn’t really mean them in the first place?

Think about it. Maybe you don’t yet have the emotional attachment to them that you need to make them happen.

Sir Steve Redgrave, when commenting at the last Olympics said the only difference between the medal winners and the losers was that the medal winners were more emotionally attached to their goals.

Their goals meant something to them! What do your goals mean to you?

Have you got them written down? Do you carry them with you every day? Do you look at them regularly? Do you visualise yourself achieving them every day? And how does that make you feel?

And when you’re about to take any type of action during the day, do you ask yourself….‘is what I’m doing, at this moment, going to move me measurably towards my goals?’

Because you’d better be sure that this is what the diamonds in MLM, the leaders in any other business, and the worlds top sportsmen are doing…

So, for some of you it could just be time to pick up the pace, and for some it may be time to re-assess your goals and make them something you can get really attached to. That should spur you on to take enough action to make them happen, because in MLM you have a vehicle that, if you work it properly, will allow you to achieve those goals.

How much action do you need to take? Well you’ll need to set aside a minimum of ten hours a week, and preferably fifteen, to build a solid MLM Business. That’s 10-15 hours of income producing activity, not facebooking, not having buddy chats with your upline and downline, but income producing activities like calling people, giving out product samples, meeting new people, presenting the business, and following up… and following up… and following up. 10-15 hours of that per week will give you total freedom within a few years.

Now I understand that 10 hours is a long time, and you’re a busy person. Time management has never been a strong point for me either, so I was recently recommended a book called No BS time management for entrepreneurs by Dan Kennedy.

It’s good!

Although Dan is a bit of a dinosaur who doesn’t even have email or a mobile phone, there’s a lot of things in there that have really made me sit up and think.

What my time is worth for example, was a shocker, and I think it will be for you too!

Let’s take a look. If you want to make 50k per year in MLM, which as we know is achievable within a few years, and you have 10 hours a week, those 2 hours are worth £100 per hour (2 hours X 5 days = 10 hours X 50 weeks = 500 X £100 = £50,000 pa) , so you’d better make sure they are productive hours, hadn’t you?

If you want 100k per year then you’d better double that to £200 an hour (it works in dollars too).

How much do you really need to achieve the goals that you’ve set for yourself? If you want a mansion, a holiday home, and a ferrari, with several holidays each year, then even £100k won’t cut it will it?

In your case your 2 hours could be worth £500 each, or £1000….or even more.

So don’t waste them!!!

Are you earning that kind of money per hour in your day job? Probably not, and it’s unlikely you ever will, that’s why you’re in MLM. So the next time you sit down to make calls, and end up shuffling papers, calling your team members for a chat, or checking your email or facebook massages..

STOP!

And think what it’s costing you.

This post is about finding your reason for building a network marketing business.

Your WHY

But before you yawn and think ‘oh not again’…. this is a bit of a new take on it. So I hope you’ll like it and who knows, you may even agree with me.

I’ve been reading Sir Ken Robinsons book ‘The Element’, the sub heading being ‘How finding your passion changes everything’. It’s about, as the title suggests, finding your passion and spending your life doing that, rather than something you hate (like so many do).

It’s about being ‘in your element’. And it’s full of interesting case studies of some very successful people who, at an early age, found their passion and have made a successful life at it.

Some of those people mentioned are Matt Groenig, who you may know from The Simpsons, Gillian Lynne, a world famous dancer and choreographer, and several other world famous actors, artists, and athletes too. Another case study is Paul McCartney (you’ve heard of him I think). As an aside, it may interest you to know that he went to the same school as one of the other Beatles. However neither of them, according to their teacher, expressed any musical talent whatsoever. This was a teacher who had half The Beatles in his class and didn’t even notice them!

Now if there is any drawback in the book at all, it’s that the case studies are of world class talents, and not your every day man in the street. That being said, don’t you think we’d all be a lot happier and the world would be a better place if everyone had the chance to be ‘in their element’ instead of doing something they don’t like.

Wouldn’t you like to be ‘in your element’ every day?

One particularly powerful quote from the book goes like this. “Many people set aside their passions to pursue things they don’t care about for the sake of financial security. The fact is though, that the job you took because it ‘pays the bills’ could easily move offshore in the coming decade. If you have never learned to think creatively and to explore your true capacity, what will you do then?”

So my question to you is ‘What is it that puts you in your element’? You know what I mean don’t you? It’s when you’re doing something and time just flies by, instead of dragging like it does for a lot of us.

For some of you it may be surfing. For some it may be teaching…or writing…or speaking in public…or doing paperwork…languages…maths…looking after kids…or something else.

Joseph Campbell called it ‘Following your Bliss’, and it’s different for us all. But whatever it is, that’s what I believe you should be doing with your life.

Lots of people hate their job. But of course giving up a steady job to pursue your passion, not knowing if it will pay the bills or not, is a bit scary. In fact it’s something most people would not even consider. For those people Network Marketing is a perfect vehicle. They can start part time, and, over a period of time, if they stick at it, it will give them the income necessary for them to follow their passion and be in their element.

On the other hand, there are those who love their jobs. As an example I speak to a lot of teachers who are passionate about teaching and excel at it, but the salary they get may not really give them the lifestyle they aspire too. For them a network marketing business, part-time (and god knows those teachers get enough time off ), could be the vehicle that allows them to remain teaching, but on their own terms.

So, in my opinion, finding a way to spend your life doing the thing that you’re most passionate about should be your WHY.

Your why is more than a house. It’s more than a new car. It’s more than a holiday to Disney with the kids.

None of those are a real WHY.

Spending as much of the time you have left being ‘in your element’. Now THAT is a real WHY!

And Network Marketing is the vehicle that will allow you to do that.

Wow, it’s been a long time since I wrote a blog post here. I really should do more of them but recently I’ve been focusing on my upcoming children’s storybook ‘Alfie Potts – The Schoolboy Entrepreneur’. If you’re already familiar with Alfie through Facebook or twitter you’ll know what I’m talking about. If not you can find out more here!

Ok, now the apology (and the plug) is out of the way, I believe I have some valuable information to share with you. It’s about ‘residual income’….you know, the thing we all get involved in Network Marketing for? That monthly pay check that will get paid to us wherever we are, whatever we’re doing, for the work we did years before.

Well here’s a few words of advice from someone who’s made a ton of mistakes in the past.

Don’t chase the big hit…

What do I mean by that? Well let me explain……

Network marketing is all about lots of people doing a little bit. I think Eric Worre says it best when he describes your success in Network Marketing as ‘your ability to get a large group of people to do a few simple actions for a consistent period of time’.

Remember that.

A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE

Not a few…..

A LARGE GROUP!

So, let me tell you what I did wrong, and what I see so many others do too.

I started my MLM career with one of the world’s leading Health & Nutrition companies. They had awesome products that I believed everyone should be using (I still do), so being in the fitness industry as I was, I figured…

‘If I can only get these products into gyms, they’ll do so much volume I’ll earn a fortune!’

Wrong!

You future success is about lots of people doing a little, remember. It’s NOT about the very remote chance that you may get Duncan Bannatyne interested in joining your team and sticking your products in his gyms.

We want residual, ‘walk away’ income don’t we? That takes time, and it comes from leveraging lots of people in your organisation, and not from signing up gyms, health shops, and beauty salons.

Here’s why….

Firstly it usually takes too much time and effort to be worthwhile. In the time it takes to get to the decision makers, have meetings, show them the products, try to explain how the system works, train the staff, etc etc etc, you could have spoken to dozens of individuals, some of which will have already got going and started to build their downlines.

Secondly, there’s no way you can call the income that comes from business like this residual because the leverage you’re using is wrong.

For example…

Let’s say you personally want to earn £2,000 next month and to achieve that you need to reach a team sales volume of £20,000 for the month. You manage do that by getting 2 gyms selling £10,000 worth of your product each. You’ve hit your target, and your 10% in commissions makes you your desired £2,000. Well done!

But what if, next month, one of the gyms decides to stop selling your product?

It happens…

What if they get a new manager who’s not ‘into MLM’ or who ‘doesn’t like the products’ and decides to pull the plug?

What if they shut the gym down because of the economy? That happens too.

So, what if you lose a half of your volume overnight?

Far better to do your £20k in sales volume by having 50 people doing £400 each.

Or better still, 100 people doing £200 each.

Or even 200 doing £100 each!

That’s lots of people doing a little bit, and because of that it’s residual income. If one or two drop out you’ll hardly notice the difference will you?

Now, ‘what if’ just half your 100 people doing £200 each go out and find one more person each to work with?

150 doing £200 each is £30k. At 10% commission your income went up by 50% in a month!

If they ALL find one each your income has doubled.

And that’s what this is all about!

Look, I know that when you’re starting out you want to make some income quickly, and when you have great products like most MLM’s do it’s tempting to go for loads of sales volume. You hit the gyms, the salons, the health shops. You do craft fairs, County Shows, etc etc etc.

That’s not Network Marketing, it’s direct selling. Worst of all it doesn’t duplicate.

It’s about lots doing a little. Do you ‘get it’ yet?

It took me a long while, believe me!

Today’s post is about something you need to learn early on in your network marketing career. That is….‘Who should you be talking to about your business?’

I’ve found that when someone sees an MLM opportunity for the first time and actually ‘gets it’, their minds often race away and they start thinking about all the people they know who are ‘hard up’ and who ‘need the money’. ‘Wow’ they think. ‘This is just what Bill/Mark/Denise needs to get them out of the hole. Poor old Mike has been on unemployment for years. I can ‘save’ all the poor people I know with this!’

WRONG!

Unless you want a lot of frustration you’ll be much better of stopping that line of thought before it starts.

The truth is that most people are poor in monetary terms because they are poor in mental terms. They have no ambition, no direction, no goals, and they have a severe amount of ‘lack programming’ from childhood and past experiences. They are the people who expect ‘something for nothing’, who believe they are ‘entitled’ to things, and that the World/Government owes them a living. They will also be the first people to tell you your new ‘business’ is a scam, one of those ‘things’, and that you’ll never succeed in that.

Of course what they really mean is ‘THEY’ would never succeed in that, and because of that they don’t want to see you succeeding either because that would tell them something about themselves they wouldn’t want to hear.

Now I know this is a generalisation, but it will be true in most cases.

To illustrate what I mean, let me give you an example from Jack Canfields amazing book ‘How to get from where you are now to where you want to be’.

Some years ago, property expert and multi millionaire Robert Allen set a challenge to the press in the US. This is what he said….

‘You can send me to any unemployment line, let me select someone who’s broke, out of work, and discouraged, and in two days time I’ll teach him the secrets of wealth. And in ninety days he’ll be back on his feet with $5,000 in the bank, and he’ll never set foot in an unemployment line again’

He then went to St Louis and asked the mayor to oversee the project. Robert handed out 1200 flyers to the unemployed offering to teach them how to become financially independent, then he set up a room with 300 chairs expecting (as you would) standing room only.

Only 50 people showed up….And half of those left at the first break when they realised how much work would be involved!

You see, this is the mentality you will be dealing with when you speak to poor people about your business, so be prepared. To save yourself some stress, speak to the most successful, open minded, and fun people you know. People who are already wealthy, successful, and in business, will always be open to hear about ways to build a potential additional income stream. They won’t struggle with the start up cash, and they won’t moan about the price of the products.

Added to that, they will also have lots of contacts with the same kind of attitude and mentality. So, even if they’re not interested in what you have, as long as you’ve approached them in a professional way they should be happy to refer you to someone they know who may be more suited to your business.

Now I must just mention one thing. There IS a difference between ‘poor’ and ‘broke’….

‘Poor’ is a state of mind while ‘broke’ is just a temporary situation’

That’s why some people will start with nothing and become very successful, and it’s also why some wealthy people will lose everything, then make it back again within a short time.

When you ask your potential prospects some qualifying questions, you’ll soon be able to tell the ‘broke’ from the ‘poor’!

So, in summary, you are NOT Mother Teresa. You are NOT out to save the poor and the needy, but to build a business that will give you security for years to come.

To do that you want good, successful people. People who are better than you are.

Sponsor UP, not DOWN.
